News Letter Beta Glucan Article 1 (Anxiety) Click here Beta Glucan Article 2 (Anxiety) Click here This newsletter is a continuation on the subject of Interleukin. If you need to catch yourself up to speed on this subject and define the terms used in this newsletter, please begin at www.theroadback.org/Beta.htm. In the last newsletter, we touched base on Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the predictive role of IL-6 with depression. Clinical trials show a person with depression will be very inclined to have high levels of IL-6 and lowering IL-6 is the goal of antidepressants. As mentioned in the last newsletter, increasing the Omega 3 fish oil that is high in the fatty acid EPA has been shown to fight depression and lower IL-6. Sometimes when we move forward with research and advancement to a new technology, we can find our self going back into the past a little bit as well. This is certainly the case here. The Past In 1999, this program used a whey protein as the only nutritional during the pre-taper and taper off medication. The success rate was not the best. Roughly fifty percent of the people could make it off the medication and the people that did the best with the program fit a specific symptom profile. For the people the program fit, it was marvelous. Of course we were not pleased with the success rate we were having and research continued. The whey protein being used was scrapped and the addition of Omega 3 high in EPA, barley, carrot, Aktivated Barley, Body Calm, Body Calm Supreme and recently the addition of the Beta1, 3-D Glucan were added. The overall success rate climbed immensely after the changes to the program were made. Here we are now in May of 2008 and we are about to move back in the past a little. Before we totally scrapped the whey protein earlier, we tried a different whey protein that we loved. However, for our application with tapering, this other whey protein was too strong for most people and had a bland taste. The ability to comply with the program was difficult at best. Now back to May 2008. While researching IL-6 and how to lower IL-6 naturally, what did I come across? Whey protein! Whey protein suppresses IL-6. What is a whey protein actually doing that would suppress IL-6? Lactalbumin (a protein found in milk), a key
component in whey protein, is what suppresses the IL-6. Lactalbumin has a marked
suppressive effect on pro-inflammatory cytokine release.
So, we have IL-6 being too high with depression but what other evidence is there for a whey protein lowering IL-6? Most everyone today has heard of the debilitating disorder of Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia patients will have increased levels of IL-6. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients will have extremely high levels of IL-6. Dr. Paul Cheney M.D. ran clinical trials using a whey protein to increase intracellular levels of the master antioxidant glutathione and the results were mixed. Some of the people had amazing positive results while others did not respond. The Chronic Viral Diseases Branch, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a clinical in April, 2008, which did show Chronic Fatigue Syndrome =’s high IL-6. More on depression:
“The association between the IL-6 polymorphism and reduced risk of depressive
symptoms confirms the role of the inflammatory response system in the
pathophysiology of IFN-alpha-induced depression; in contrast, the effect of the
5-HTT gene was small and perhaps dependent on the status of the inflammatory
response.” Anxiety-Depression – Burn patients will have high levels of IL-6 and anxiety-depression. The continuous negative emotion can induce the increase of IL-6 and lead to delay of the healing of the burn wounds.
Department of Psychology, Indiana University-Purdue University
Indianapolis
concluded in their February 2008, clinical trial, IL-6 will
be higher in depressive patients. Looking back over the early years of this program and many of the success stories we received, they were from people taking an antidepressant for the treatment of mild to major depression. One might still think antidepressants are only prescribed for depression but that has not been the case for decades. This was the population base that responded well to our early program. May 2008 As the research of IL-6 eventually led to a whey
protein, I checked the Web Site of the whey protein I began using in 2001 to see
if they offered any new information. They just released a new whey protein that
was not quite as strong as the one used in 2001 and they also added a natural
flavoring to make it more palatable! This new whey protein, with a slight
vanilla sweet taste, is what I would have asked them to produce.
The master antioxidant glutathione is produced in abundance with this whey protein. Plus, and this part should not really come last here; this whey protein is from hormone free, pesticide free cows. This is part of the reason I switched to this brand of whey protein in 2001 but not all of the reasons. You will find many “truths” just are not so true when it comes to manufacturers of whey protein products. There is a major difference between a whey concentrate and a whey isolate. Some whey protein manufacturers will show their clinical trials with a concentrate but change the product later to inferior whey isolate to lower the cost but still claim the results from their earlier whey concentrate. Click
here and view the chart comparing a real natural whey protein to the normal
whey isolate brands.
When you look at the chart, the ImmunePro is what we changed to in 2001 and the RenewPro is what we introduce today. The other whey proteins tested against are what we used initially with this program. Anxiety - We really
did not get the desired results with people on a benzodiazepine or with pure
anxiety using a whey protein in 2001. I do not see anything new to suggest we
would now using a whey protein.
The application of this whey protein is for fatigue, depression, a dullness etc. A little more Information With The Road Back now recommending this whey protein, RenewPro, you will begin finding articles on the Internet recommending other whey proteins for tapering off these medications. That I guarantee. Some have already appeared that are based on my old research from 2001. RenewPro or any good whey protein concentrate will not be a cure all and will not be for everyone. There is an exact application for RenewPro, and that being the other side of anxiety! Again, if you have anxiety, don’t bother with RenewPro but add Beta 1, 3-D Glucan with the other supplements for anxiety in this program. Here is that line: Anxiety – (Low levels of IL-2) Fatigue - Depression –
(High levels of IL-6) A different approach needs to
be taken depending on the side of the line you find yourself. Whey proteins lower IL-6 Beta1, 3-D Glucan will raise
IL-2 We are refining The Road Back program and it is
working! Many of the people we have worked with for years
that have anxiety and protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal have found relief for
the first time taking the Beta1, 3-D Glucan. We are very confident the same results will take
place for anyone on the other side of the spectrum with the RenewPro. The Road Back works with many people that take
different supplements. There is no advice we can offer anyone using a different
whey protein that is not getting the results we suggest in this newsletter. All
whey proteins are not the same. Please refer back to the chart again and have a
look at all other popular whey proteins and notice where they stack up. RenewPro® is the highest potency
smooth mix Non-denatured Native Whey Protein. It is not a by-product of cheese
manufacture, which damages/ denatures the whey protein components including the
amino acid Cysteine. RenewPro® therefore contains an exceptional
amount of Covalent Bonded Cysteine, the critical precursor (required nutrient)
for the intracellular production of Glutathione. Glutathione is our crucial
Master Antioxidant and the optimal way to maintain healthy levels is by
consuming Native Whey Proteins. Again, RenewPro whey protein is from
disease-free, pesticide-free, chemical-free, natural grass pasture fed cows that
are hormone
treatment-free and GMO-free. TRB Health is
very proud to now carry RenewPro.
